A day

Filed under: Eliza — elizasmom @ 8:50 pm

Jim is driving back from Boston after a day there with a good friend, a much-needed reprieve from stay-at-home-dad-dom, particularly after this week of whining.

I’ve technically been a full-time working mom my entire motherhood, but because of the flexible schedule I’ve had until this schoolyear, it’s felt more like part-time, and I’ve always felt like I had a foot in both camps, not to say the best of both worlds. Not having those afternoon with her is really killing me.

I understand completely why my boss wants me in the office full-time; she’s looking out for me because if I’m there, I look more essential, and in this economy, I can’t afford to be thought inessential.

But I miss my girl so much sometimes, and I practically shoved Jim out the door this morning because I was so excited to get started on our day.

We did a whole lot of not much remarkable, but I realized I always smile as I cross the street in Hipsterville because pedestrians have the right of way and all these cars have to stop so me and my awesome kid can walk across the street and I think, “People, have you seen my aweseom kid? That right there next to me is the awesomest kid that ever kidded. No, no, don’t thank me for allowing you to be witness to my kid’s awesomeness. It’s MY PLEASURE.”

And than god smites me for my hubris (but the kid, she is still awesome).

We wandered and poked and bought a peacock feather and had a bagel and tried on funny hats and did a bunch of other stuff that would not be amiss in a movie montage and it was sunny and perfect.

We even had time to work on science when we stopped at this weird little turn-off by the river that runs through our town, where you can see dinosaur footprints in the stone that was once-upon-a-time a riverbank. They all seemed to be running away from the river.

Eliza kept asking how they got up the wall behind her.

Impermanence is a difficult concept for a little kid.

  1. Glad to see that illness did in no way diminish Eliza’s flair for “inspired” clothing choices. As for the “People, have you seen my aweseom kid? That right there next to me is the awesomest kid that ever kidded” part, that was exactly my kind of thinking when I was out and about with my own incredibly amazing two girlies many years ago. History repeating itself, it semms, right?

  5. heh… the whole awesome kids bit? It’s a large part of why I blog, to record their super-coolness and to make sure their relatives don’t get left out of the loop of amazing. And the general population is not harmed by knowing how fab they are too!

  8. Glad you were able to get some one on one girl time. It’s so nice to be able to enjoy them instead of just living through the grumpiness and tantrums which are sometimes the only thing that ‘working’ moms get to experience.
